Identifying asbestos cement sheets

Before removing ceilings, it’s important to identify if it contains asbestos. If your home or outbuilding was built before the mid-1980s, then it will almost certainly contain asbestos. However, if your ceilings were installed after this, then there is still a chance that they may contain asbestos. A home asbestos survey will help you to identify asbestos in your property.

Once the presence of asbestos is identified, we can then discuss your options for its safe removal.

Asbestos sheet FAQs

What is an asbestos cement ceiling sheet?

An asbestos cement ceiling sheet is a building material typically used in homes built between the 1950s and mid-1980s. Due to its hard wearing and fire retardant qualities, it was a popular choice in residential buildings for ceilings, also as cladding on sheds, garages and outbuildings.

Asbestos cement is a mixture of cement and asbestos. This is usually about 10-15% of the total product, forming a hard wearing sheet material. The use of asbestos cement was gradually phased out, and by 1999 the use of asbestos was banned in the UK.

Can I remove asbestos sheets by myself?

Asbestos sheets in outbuildings are not considered a risk if left undisturbed. However, if disturbed, such as during the removal process, they can pose a serious health risk.

In many cases, it is legal for homeowners to remove asbestos themselves. However, there are some restrictions. Contact us today if you are unsure whether you need a licensed contractor.

How much does asbestos cement sheet removal cost?

Each removal option is unique to the client and their domestic property. We will assess and discuss your individual circumstances and requirements at the quotation stage. We aim to provide competitive quotations for your timeframe and budgetary requirements. Contact us today for a quote.

Can you seal asbestos cement sheeting instead of removing it?

While removing asbestos is the best course of action in some cases, not all domestic asbestos needs to be removed. Undamaged, and even some damaged asbestos garage roofs may be able to be encapsulated to refurbish them and prevent further damage. Get in touch today for advice about the best service for your needs.
