Amiante STR have recently completed a major licensed asbestos removal project to the former Allder’s department store in Camberley, Surrey, completing works eight weeks ahead of the planned thirty week programme.
Scope of Works
The project involved:
- Removal of approximately 1,900m² of non-asbestos ceiling tiles and ceiling grid per floor
- Removal of non-asbestos partition walls throughout under full asbestos conditions
- Removal of asbestos-containing sprayed coating (overspray) from ceiling soffits
- Removal of sprayed coating from structural beams and columns across all 3no floors
- Construction of multiple asbestos enclosures to all floors.
- Removal of all asbestos and correct disposal of generated waste via an enclosed skip which was delivered to a licensed land fill site.
- Personal monitoring of operatives inside and outside of the enclosure to confirm control measures to be adequate.
- Havs Monitoring due to the requirement of utilising reciprocating saws to cut out pipework.
The sprayed coating was confirmed to contain Amosite (brown asbestos), classified as asbestos thermal insulation. Due to the high-risk nature of this material, all works were carried out under fully controlled conditions in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Controlled Works & Methodology
The project required:
- One enclosure on the 2nd floor
- One enclosure on the 1st floor
- Two enclosures on the ground floor
A range of specialist removal techniques were utilised, including:
- Controlled wet stripping using the injection wetting method
- Aqua blasting via the Torbo wet blast system
Given the scale of the enclosures and the legal requirements for adequate air management, careful planning and engineering controls were critical to maintaining safe working conditions.
Air Management & Independent Monitoring
With other contractors, including Collard Group, operating on site during the asbestos removal works, stringent air monitoring protocols were implemented.
An independent UKAS-accredited analyst carried out:
- Background air monitoring
- Leak testing throughout the project
- Personal monitoring
This ensured enclosure integrity was maintained at all times and demonstrated full compliance with regulatory standards.
HSE Audit
During the works, an inspector from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conducted an unannounced site audit. The inspector commended the quality of the RAMS documentation and acknowledged that all associated risks had been thoroughly identified and appropriately controlled.
This project highlights Amiante’s ability to deliver technically demanding asbestos removal schemes safely, compliantly, and ahead of programme — even within complex, multi-contractor environments.
